Way Above Average
I you liked Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat, then you should love Above Average by Amitabha Bagchi. It is definately more though provoking and the picture painted by the author about Delhi makes me want to go and visit. Having finished the book on a rainy, slightly chilly afternoon over many cups of chai and black coffee, the book left me very nostalgic about my college days, the bonds formed then, the heartbreaks and tequila shots and of course fantasizing about the aunties. The non linear narration appeals to me as a Tarantino fan. The honesty in the narration and the humor in even sad situations makes it a very enjoyable read. And you really don't have to be an IITian to get the book. Being an engineer and having spent time in research helps me relate the some of the fundas in the book (more than anyone else, I really don't know). The book does not live up to its title....It is way above average. Bottom line....go grab a copy today. Current Mood: relaxed | | Monday, July 16th, 2007 | | 3:59 pm |

Found out today that the Citi Dividend Card which used to give me 5 % cashback on gas, supermarket and pharmacy purchases, now gives me only 2% on the above categories...they just discontinued the offer a few months back and as per the fine print they are not obliged to inform the customer...urgggh.....stop using Citibank MC now... | | Tuesday, September 19th, 2006 | | 5:20 pm |
A few months back, when I heard Roger Waters was touring North America, I knew that it was among the 'must attend' concerts for this year....was initially planning on going to the one at the Q in Cleveland....but then to pacify my visibly upset cousin, I agreed to attend the one in Camden, NJ at the Tweeter Center this past weekend.....chaddi dost, cousin who doubles as best buddy, other cousin and yours truly swayed under the influence of alcohol (actually just me and now the not so upset cousin) while Mr. Waters sang the following: Set One 1. In the Flesh 2. Mother 3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun 4. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - V) (abridged) 5. Have a Cigar 6. Wish You Were Here 7. Southampton Dock 8. The Fletcher Memorial Home 9. Perfect Sense, Parts 1 and 2 10. Leaving Beirut 11. Sheep Set Two (The Dark Side of the Moon) 1. Speak to Me/Breathe 2. On the Run 3. Time 4. The Great Gig in the Sky 5. Money 6. Us and Them 7. Any Colour You Like 8. Brain Damage 9. Eclipse Encore 1. The Happiest Days of Our Lives 2. Another Brick in the Wall, Part II 3. Vera 4. Bring the Boys Back Home 5. Comfortably Numb Highlights of the show included.....A guy in his 40's with his kid who must have been no more than 10.....I had to stop the guy and tell him " You rock for bringing the kid along"......While 'not so upset' cousin and me were in waiting line to start double fisting Guinness' and Heinekens....the lady in front of us says...I'm sure he is going to play 'The great gig in the sky'....he has the ladies on stage for backing vocals.....and then after a wonderful sly smile she added..." My first son was born to 'The great gig in the sky' and my second son was born to 'money'......priceless I say....and last but not least....I experienced the closest I can get to Floyd with the guys I grew up rocking to and with!!!!! In the past few years I have attended Dave Matthews Band concerts, U2 concerts, Rush, Queen with Paul Rodgers and Waters...DMB fans and concerts are very energetic....U2 concerts are amazing but the crowd is quite the yuppie kind......but I have to say the best fans were at the Rush, Queen and Waters concert.....the 60's and 70's junta knew how to ROCK!!!!..reminds me of the time I went for the Rush concert by myself....was braving the rain and cold and to prevent my cigarette from getting wet I was holding it with two fingers and covering it with my palm....around me the air smelt of Mary Jane's perfume....and this guy (probably in his 50's) tapped me on the shoulder and with a wide grin said " I don't mean to borrow a hit from you....but this now smells like a rock concert"....I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was only smoking Marlboro Ultra Lites...... Now I am back home and shall watch a few more Floyd concerts with the new toy.....Infocus IN 72 Current Music: Atif Aslam - Mahi Ve | | Thursday, August 3rd, 2006 | | 11:42 am |

SETLIST Pantala Naga Pampa...>* Rapunzel* When The World Ends* Rhyme & Reason* Hunger For The Great Light* Break Free* Louisiana Bayou* Smooth Rider*+ Grey Street* Sleep To Dream Her* Grace Is Gone JTR* Crash Into Me Jimi Thing* Ants Marching* Encore: American Baby Intro...>* Two Step* All songs with Butch Taylor *Rashawn Ross on trumpet +Warren Haynes | | Thursday, July 20th, 2006 | | 5:15 pm |
Pakistan not involved in Mumbai blasts: DiplomatQOUTE "Pakistan was the first country to express its condolence and Indian authorities should not accuse Pakistan without proper investigation," Deputy High Commissioner of Pakistan to India Afrasiab said in New Delhi on the sidelines of a function.Just because you're the first one to express condolences....that does not make you innocent.......my thoughts after this are just a series of blips.... | | Thursday, July 6th, 2006 | | 12:39 pm |
Apna pre-tournament and all time favorite , Italy is in the final....the last time I felt the same buzz and excitement was in 1994......I hope this time around the The Azzuri payback Les Bleus for the Euro 2000 game..... I quote Marcello Lippi from on of the article "Now," Lippi said, "we've got to complete the opera."Good Luck and Godspeed....May the force be with you.....GO AZZZUURRIIIII... Its one of those near perfect days weather wise....a slight chill in the morning.......heats up during the day and cloudy in the evening....with atleast a chance of rain...thats what makes it near perfect...now if I could only have some thunder and lightening..... Takes me back to Torrey street days......get back from school.....wait eagerly for the rain....have Adi make some Chai...and sit on the couch waiting for rain with chai and sutta....and finally when it rains......ahhh bliss..... Guess I'll make do with Fir Hill ka balcony...the chai and sutta is still there though....... Current Mood: blahCurrent Music: Mynta- Nandu's dance | | Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 | | 5:12 pm |
Had gone for the Queen+Pual Rodgers concert last evening at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Didn't go expecting much since they are without Freddie Mercury, and everybody kept saying " I would have come but its no fun without Freddie as the frontman".... . At the end of the show all I could think was if they are so good without Freddie, I can only imagine how it would have been with during their peak....They have a decent light show goin on in the background and it was not as packed as some of the other concerts I have been too......but in terms of music it ranked right up there with the U2 concert in Detroit or the Rush concert at Blossom Music Center during their 30th anniversary tour.....They are still touring North America for a couple fo weeks more, and if they are coming anywhere near you I highly suggest you try and make it. Tickets are available for all shows, I think..... The setlist: 01 Reachin Out 02 Tie Your Mother Down 03 Fat Bottomed Girls 04 I Want To Break Free 05 Take Love (new Song) 06 Crazy Little Thing Called Love 07 Love Of My Life 08 Hammer To Fall 09 Feel Like Making Love 10 Let There Be Drums 11 I'm In Love With My Car 12 Guitar Solo 13 Last Horizon 14 Bad Company 15 Can't Get Enough Of Your Love 16 These Are the Days Of Our Lives 17 Radio Ga Ga 18 Dragon Attack 19 Another One Bites The Dust 20 Under Pressure 21 The Show Must Go On 22 Bohemian Rhapsody Encore Break 23 We Will Rock You 24 All Right Now 25 We Are The Champions 26 God Save The Queen ( Pictures ) | | Tuesday, March 14th, 2006 | | 4:50 pm |
Commenting on the brews had over the weekend.....I think Dreadnaught by Three Floyds has taken over the number 1 spot......very hoppy not overly bitter....the alcohol content though high was not overwhelming.....and the aroma when poured......simply great.....hops...grapefruit...very citrusy.....with a nice sweetness added to it....makes it probably the best beer I have had.... Was over at Dick's sporting goods over the weekend to get training gloves...thats when I remembered seeing something funny there during my last visit.....found that picture and it is reproduced below | | Wednesday, March 8th, 2006 | | 6:05 pm |

I dont really think anyone is a morning person......when people are classified as having a pleasant disposition in the morning or 'morning persons'...its just that they are giving themselves mroe time once they wake up...before they go public..... why the sudden realization...i was up 2 hours before i needed to get to work.....and given the time.....i walked into work ekdam happy and chirpy...or then it could have been the fact the India beat Pakistan and I got to see some super batting:) | | Tuesday, January 31st, 2006 | | 4:22 am |

Winding Road is this free online auto magazine...... The latest issue has a story about the Bugatti Veyron, which is the new supercar (Pg. 28) and then there is a satirical piece (Pg. 15) on the anti-supercar and the author has decided to call that car - The Karthikeyan... and he says the chief engineer will be Eddie Jordan..:).....I just find that very funny Anyways small excerpts from both articles... The Bugatti Veyron...Take the Veyron's official top speed of 253 mph. The Veyron is actually capable of pushing on past 257 mph, with each further 1 mph beyond 248 mph requiring an additional 8 hp to overcome air resistance. At maximum speed, the 8-liter W-16 engine is consuming fuel at a rate of 2.3 mpg, meaning the 22-gallon tank would run dry after just 12 minutes (or 51 miles) of flat-out motoring.....................According to Bugatti, 0-60 mph takes under 2.5 seconds, 0-125 mph 7.3 seconds, 0-186 mph 16.7 seconds and 0-250 mph 55.6. To put it in perspective, if a fully wound-up McLaren F1 went past a poised, stationary Veyron at 100 mph and the Veyron driver gave it the gun as the F1 passed, the Bugatti would still reach 200 mph just before the McLaren did. Head spinning, I retired to bed. Tomorrow was going to be a big day.The article on The Karthikeyan And just as the Veyron was named after a racing driver, so should we name the anti-supercar. Now, pipe down in the back:Despite the obvious parallels with this wheezing, underachieving snail of a car, we will not be calling the antisupercar “Little E.” After all, it will be an endearing, characterful car with go-kart handling, not a self absorbed prima donna who reeks of Old Spice. The namesake driver should be slow, but charmingly so. Karthikeyan it is then – but what’s in name?Ohhhhh and BTW...... their cover article is on the Corvette ZO6...*grin* Current Mood: ya whateverCurrent Music: humming of the photocopy machine | | Sunday, December 11th, 2005 | | 4:50 pm |
Attended my second and last show last night from the U2 Vertigo tour at The Q in Cleveland........the set list was slightly different from the one that was played at The Palace in Detroit... got to listen to Yahweh and 40......and Mysterious Ways which is one of those songs which may not be one of their most popular but is one i really like along with Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses(which the played the concert in Detroit) ....From the new album there was Original of The Species along with Vertigo, Love and Peace or Else, City of Blinding Lights and Yahweh........and I was thrilled to hear Bono sing Norwegian Wood right after Original of the Species......Norwegian Wood is one of my all time favorite Beatles' song.......The encore had another John Lenon song which is Instant Karma....during the encore when they were playing Until the end of the World, Bono was running behing The Edge around the elipse and all this while the song is on and The Edge still has his guitar on and is srtumming the music.....that was a great sight too.....all in all..paisa vasool......and the brother and his wife enjoyed it a lot too...... now I prepare myself for Queen + Paul Rodgers in Cleveland on March 21st...*grin* The Setlist....Main Set: City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo - She Loves You, Elevation, Gloria, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - In a Little While, Beautiful Day, Original of the Species - Norwegian Wood, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Love and Peace or Else, Sunday Bloody Sunday - Rock the Casbah, Bullet the Blue Sky, Miss Sarajevo, Pride, Where the Streets Have No Name, One - Help Encore(s): Until the End of the World, Mysterious Ways, With or Without You, Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Instant Karma, Yahweh, 40...... I'm not 30 yet......haven't gotten to a stage where I think I am facing any sort of crisis...... and so when I got down to watching High Fidelity ( had read the basic premise) last night, I wasn't expecting too much that I could associate with....was I wrong or what!!!! One of the refreshing movies I have seen of late....I think the last one was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.... John Cusack is great as Rob Gordon, the 30 something guy who once again finds out that the woman he is dating is walking out on him...he then makes a list of his top 5 breakups and tries to understand why things happen to him the way they happen in these 5 relationships which inlcude his current one......an excellent soundtrack, which made the music much more enjoyable for me.....this one is a MUST WATCH some memorable quotes...
THIS IS HOW THE MOVIE STARTSRob: What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music? ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------- AND SOME MORE........Laura: Listen, Rob, would you have sex with me? Because I want to feel something else than this. It either that, or I go home and put my hand in the fire. Unless you want to stub cigarettes out on my arm. Rob: No. I only have a few left, I've been saving them for later. Laura: Right. It'll have to be sex, then. Rob: Right. Right. ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------- Rob: It would be nice to think that since I was 14, times have changed. Relationships have become more sophisticated. Females less cruel. Skins thicker. Instincts more developed. But there seems to be an element of that afternoon in everything that's happened to me since. All my romantic stories are a scrambled version of that first one. ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------- Rob: Sometimes I got so bored of trying to touch her breast that I would try to touch her between her legs. It was like trying to borrow a dollar, getting turned down, and asking for 50 grand instead. ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------- | | Thursday, December 1st, 2005 | | 3:38 pm |
